Solar Power

Solar power is one of the cleanest forms of energy, taking advantage of the earth’s most abundant energy source: the sun. Since 1883, when the first solar cell was developed, solar power has become exponentially more feasible for individual homeowners. Whether installed and collected on the roof of a building or purchased through an electrical utility, it’s never been easier for individuals to participate in the fastest-growing area of clean energy today.

Solar power is collected and distributed by a number of different methods that employ the use of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels. PV-based solar systems are touted for providing clean, reliable, affordable, and accessible energy. Only recently has the cost of installing a PV system become more viable for home and building owners. A number of state and federal tax incentives help drive the cost of a solar installation down even further. Once installed, operating a solar system is virtually free, requiring little maintenance.

Solar Powered Housing Community in California (from nrel.gov)
This case study examines the construction of a community of 250 homes, which are all powered by solar energy. In addition to other energy efficient upgrades and sustainable construction methods, each home features a 1.2 – 2.4 kW photovoltaic system.

BJ’s Wholesale Club in Saratoga, New York (from powernaturally.org)
Funded through incentives provided by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, this 80,000 square foot building features 912 photovoltaic panels, which produce 100kW of power. NYSERDA financed more than half of the project’s total $700,000 cost.
