This case study examines the construction of a community of 250 homes, which are all powered by solar energy. In addition to other energy efficient upgrades and sustainable construction methods, each home features a 1.2 – 2.4 kW photovoltaic system.

A total of 72, 60W photovoltaic panels compose this residential PV system. The system supplies about 15% of the homeowner’s annual electricity needs and stores energy in backup batteries in the case of a power failure.

Commercial

BJ’s Wholesale Club in Saratoga, New York (from powernaturally.org)
Funded through incentives provided by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, this 80,000 square foot building features 912 photovoltaic panels, which produce 100kW of power. NYSERDA financed more than half of the project’s total $700,000 cost.

Albany County Hockey Facility (from powernaturally.org)
This hockey arena is powered by a 40kW photovoltaic system, comprised of 240 individual PV panels. This installation is projected to reduce the building’s CO2 emissions by 43,900 pounds annually.
