Biomass Stove Technology Description

The most viable way homeowners can use biomass to meet their heating needs is through the use of a biomass stove. These stoves are usually designed to burn more than one type of biomass, giving owners a more versatile and renewable heating solution. Biomass is usually supplied in the form of pellets. Pellet appliances try to automate as many of its functions as possible to provide maximum ease of use to the owner. The heat setting automatically regulates the amount of pellets needed from the supply hopper.

Automatic delivery of the pellet fuel helps to reduce the amount of attention that its owner must give, and helps provide clean burns that meet the desired temperature level. Most stove designs use a fan to deliver air to the fire and route stove exhaust to a vent pipe. Another fan delivers heat to the home by blowing air through heat exchanges in the stove and then directly into the room or through an air handling device that links into ductwork.

There are a number of different biomass stoves available to cater to various heating needs and aesthetic appeal. Freestanding pellet stoves provide a flexible heating solution that can be used in nearly any home area. Fireplace inserts can be installed in existing fireplaces, offering easy integration that’s not as obtrusive as a free standing stove. Built-in stoves offer the look of a fireplace insert for homes that do not have an existing fireplace. Pellet furnaces are larger units designed to replace a traditional furnace appliance. These are larger units that are designed to heat entire homes and distribute warm air via the home’s ductwork.

Pellet stoves can also be categorized based on the method used to distribute pellet fuel. Top-feed stoves deliver the fuel from a storage container located above the fire. Bottom-feed stoves deliver pellets from storage located behind or next to the stove. Generally, bottom-fed stoves are seen as more efficient because the feeding action helps to remove ash from the burn area.
