Pellet Stove Case Study
Since 2006, the Pelletiers have been using an Enviro pellet stove to meet their home’s heating needs. Located in Caribou, Maine, one of the country’s colder and snowier climates, the stove requires about 4 tons of pellets per heating season. With prices of wood pellets ranging from $215 to $250 per ton, the cost of heating is dramatically lower than using oil or gas.
The quality of pellets used corresponds to the price. Lower-quality pellets create more ash, which in turn require frequent cleaning. Regardless of what type of pellet is used, all stoves require periodic cleaning to keep the heating operation as efficient as possible.
The Pelletiers report some downsides to owning a wood pellet stove. Notably, the location of the stove is important and should be centrally located. Storing pellets in dry areas when they’re not being used is also something that many homeowners would have to get used to, however for the substantial cost savings potential, many are willing to deal with it.
