Biomass has been used throughout history to meet our heating demands. Today, harnessing the heating and energy potential in biomass is cost-effective and inexpensive. People typically associate biomass with wood stoves, however the use of pellets and other materials is on the rise. Pellet-burning stoves are becoming more popular because of their versatility. Pellets are composed of compacted wood chips, sawdust, bark, agricultural crop waste, and other organic materials. Many pellet-fueled appliances can also burn nutshells, corn kernels, small wood chips, sunflowers, and soy beans.
Since 2006, the Pelletiers have been using an Enviro pellet stove to meet their home’s heating needs. Located in Caribou, Maine, one of the country’s colder and snowier climates, the stove requires about 4 tons of pellets per heating season.
