What do I bring to a yoga group/studio class?
Water to drink after class, your own mat is optional,
an empty stomach, and an open mind.
What clothes do I wear to yoga class?
Comfortable ones like sweat pants and a tee-shirt, or
spandex bike shorts and a tank top. Make sure that
your waist band can stretch and you can easily move
your arms.
Who does yoga?
At least 16.5 million Americans! Millions more around
the world. They include moms, businessmen, children,
teenagers, older folks, pregnant women, athletes, and more!
To name a few celebrities: Christy Turlington, Russell Simmons,
Madonna, Tiger Woods, Chelsea Clinton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ricky Martin.
Where does yoga come from?
Yoga is mentioned in ancient India texts called the Upanishads, written
between 1000-5000 B.C.
Is yoga competitive?
No. Yoga is a self-practice taught to individuals to venture inwards and learn
more about themselves. It is about acknowledging your own limits and seeing
your own abilities.
Do I need to be flexible to start?
No. Everyone starts from a different place when they begin practicing yoga.
Every posture can be adapted so that you can work at your own pace to get
into postures.
What kind of movements do you do?
We engage all your muscles in movements that lift the arms, arc the back,
bend the knees, flex the feet. You will use many muscles that are not used
day-to-day.
Is there a certification process for yoga teachers?
Yes. To be a registered teacher with Yoga Alliance, a certifying group, you
must complete a minimum of 200 hours of training in different categories.

I've heard of yoga therapy. How does that work?
Yoga therapy is a yoga practice that targets a specific health issue using
breathing techniques, yoga postures, and designing a routine that is suited to
your lifestyle. Yoga therapy is our goal in private yoga sessions.
What time of day is best to practice?
Sunrise and sunset are the most ideal times. But anytime during the day,
when you have a clear head, works.
Will yoga help me lose weight?
Yes. Yoga helps develop body awareness and with that comes more
knowledge about what your body needs, how it digests and excretes and also
helps you to notice when your body is saying no to food. Also, certain
postures can help decrease waist fat, hip fat, tone the buttocks, and back.
Is yoga a religion?
No. Yoga is based on the same texts where the outline of Hinduism comes
from, but yoga is a practice to help you life your life more harmoniously and
peacefully.
Why do yoga?
There are so many reasons!! For better health. For a calm mind. For fun. For
stress-relief. For helping tone the body. For learning about yourself. For
flexibility.
How much are yoga mats and where do I buy them?
Yoga mats can cost from $10-$100 depending on what kind you purchase:
recycled material mats, standard rubber mats, or cloth mats. They are
available in many stores: Dick's Sporting Goods, K-Mart, Barnes & Noble,
Target, Wegmans and more!
What about props?
Depending on your teacher and style of yoga, you may be required to own or
use props. In Devi Yoga's style, there is no use of props unless absolutely
necessary.
I do a yoga DVD sometimes. Isn't that enough?
No. Although yoga DVDs give a good overview of postures, it is imperative
that you check with a yoga teacher to see if you are doing a pose correctly.
Over time, if you are not doing a pose correctly you can develop bodily
injuries or problems rather than help them. It is with the correctly alignment
and knowledge of a teacher that you can successfully do a yoga DVD. I
highly suggest every once in a while visiting a group class, just to check your
form.
What is this symbol that I see in a lot of yoga studios and your
website?
It is an "Aum/Om" symbol. It is the sound of the universe according to Hindu
scriptures. It represents God or Brahma. According to the Mandukya
Upanishad "Om is the one eternal syllable of which all that exists is but the
development. The past, the present, and the future are all included in this
one sound, and all that exists beyond all three forms of time is also implied in
it. You may here this sound in Sanskrit chants, in a yoga class to start and
end the practice, or see the symbol on yoga clothes and products. It is
comprised of three sounds: oh-oo-mm.
Why do my joints crack when I do yoga? Is it OK that my body makes
those sounds?
Yes it is OK! The sounds of cracking are the release of gas from the inside of
the joints. Cracking is not harmful to the body. (Check out Dr. Melissa
